The Island of the Dragon's Blood Tree

My mini Soqotra Exhibition.

Since I returned from my last visit to Soqotra in 2003 I have given a number of illustrated talks to various local groups and societies in and around my home town of Hayle in Cornwall. In addition to showing video and photographs through my video projector from a DVD player, I also had a number of photographs on display for the audience to view before and after my talk. These photographs always created interest and I spent many minutes explaining the circumstances under which they were taken.

From time to time I visited my local library to find that there was often a display of paintings by a local artist. So I thought “Why not my Soqotra photographs?” So I asked the library staff if it would be possible to have a small display of my photographs. I was booked to create the display in 14 months time!!!

My photographs are all mounted on a light, foam board which prevents them from curling and each has four pieces of Velcro stuck to the back. The Velcro will adhere to the surface of the display boards so pins would not be needed.

For this display I decided to have a map of Soqotra as the centre piece of one side of the display, with the map surrounded by photos joined to the map by a thin ribbon so viewers could see what the scenery was like in various parts of the island.

The display lasted for four weeks and attracted quite a lot of interest, according to the library staff. The library charged me just £5.00 for the loan of their display boards so I think that was money well spent. The display lasted for four weeks during October 2007.
